Issue: Results Not Meeting Expectation

There is often a gap between the actual results which a team delivers and the expectations of the senior leader. This occurs more often than not because of the capability of a team and its capacity to get results are not consistent.  The team needs to improve one or the other.  To put it simply: “They need to up their game”.

Definitions:

Capability is the abilities, skill, experience and the right behaviors of the team (or specific individuals) to lead others 

Capacity is the amount of physical and mental energy the team (or an individual) can give to leading others. This includes their amount of confidence

If Capability is high but Capacity low – then the consequences will be:

  • Taking too much time to complete tasks, lower productivity, and not reaching potential.
  • They have reached their ceiling of output.

If Capacity is high but Capability low – then the consequences will be:

  • Working too hard to accomplish goals, poor delegation, and unfocussed
  • They have reached their ceiling of output.

Behaviors required to increase Capability:

  • Willingness to change and learn new skills
  • Improved delegation
  • Communicating for understanding
  • Improve coordinating ability

Behaviors required to increase Capacity

  • Ability to change ones emotional state
  • Self-awareness
  • Self-care
  • Willingness

To close the gap between results and expectations begin by measuring the bench strength of the team. A strategy to develop Capability and Capacity can then be created and implemented.
